Over 10,700 People From Strife-Torn Manipur Take Shelter In Mizoram, Assam
Of the people who have taken shelter in Mizoram camps, at least three displaced ailing people have died including two children.
More than 10,700 people from strife-torn Manipur, mostly tribals, have taken shelter in neighbouring states of Mizoram and southern Assam after being displaced from their state. Officials in Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl said that a total of 9,501 tribal people from Manipur have taken shelter in 10 districts of the state. Of the people who have taken shelter in Mizoram camps, at least three displaced ailing people have died including two children, as per an IANS report.
The northeastern state has been on the boil for almost a month as a result of the ethnic clashes between Kuki and Meitei communities. The Kuki community has been opposing the inclusion of the Meiti community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.
Two other displaced people were killed in a road accident near Saitual town while fleeing from their homes in Churachandpur, Manipur.
The highest number of 3,481 displaced people took shelter in Kolasib district, adjoining southern Assam, followed by 3,157 in Aizawl and 2,390 in Saitual districts, as per the report.
Meanwhile, 473 displaced people took refuge in Champhai, Khawzawl, Serchhip, Mamit, Lunglei, Hnahthial and Siaha towns of Mizoram.
The Mizoram government, following the instruction of Chief Minister Zoramthanga, has formed a committee headed by the home minister Lalchamliana to look after various aspects of the international displaced people from Manipur , where the violence has killed over 100 people and injured 320 others.

Representatives from Young Mizo Association (YMA), the state's biggest NGO, Mizoram Journalists' Association and Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a church leaders' committee, several ministers are included in the committee, said an official, as per the report.
Meanwhile, around 1,200 people from Manipur have taken shelter in around 12 camps in Assam's Cachar district, the report stated. Officials in Silchar said that the Assam government has been providing food and shelter to the displaced people.
