Gandhi reached Moirang in Bishnupur district on Friday morning in a chopper and visited two relief camps, where he interacted with the violence affected people and listened to their problems. Both the camps that the leader visited sheltered around 1000 affected people, according to reports.
Rahul Gandhi also interacted with children displaced by the violence in Manipur. More than 100 people have lost their lives and nearly 40,000 displaced since ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities erupted in May.
Gandhi is also scheduled to meet 10 like-minded party leaders and members of civil society organisation in Imphal.
On Thursday, the Congress leader had toured the relief camps in Churchandpur, one of the most severely affected regions in the ethnic clashes, the district where the signs of clahses was first witnessed when Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s event venue was torched by a mob in April.
Earlier on Thursday, Gandhi’s convoy was stopped midway while he was on his way to relief camps in Churachandpur. Following this, he took a chopper ride to reach his destination.
His convoy getting blocked triggered a political slugfest as the Grand Old Party alleged that the BJP-led government is trying to disrupt the leader’s visit. The saffron party retaliated by accusing him of being “stubborn” for choosing to take the road trip despite him being advised to take a chopper as his trip was opposed by various quarters.
