Manipur Students' Killing: Total Curfew In Imphal As CBI Reaches State, Amit Shah Vows Action — Top Points

Protests erupted in Manipur after photos of the bodies of the two students -- Phijam Hemjit and Hijam Linthoingambi -- who were missing since July 6, were shared widely on social media on Monday.

New Delhi: In the wake of the ongoing violence in Manipur over the kidnapping and killing of two students, the state government on Wednesday imposed a full curfew in Imphal East and Imphal West.

The crime led to two days of violent protests by students and youths on the streets of the state capital, leading to more than 60 people being injured.

A team of CBI officials, led by the agency's Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar, reached Manipur on Wednesday afternoon and started the probe into the crime.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh that Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured him that those who committed the crime will be arrested and punished.

Here's all the latest updates from Manipur violence:

  • Protests erupted in the northeastern state after photos of the bodies of the two students -- Phijam Hemjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17) -- who were missing since July 6, were shared widely on social media on Monday.

  • The chief minister told reporters: "The central and state governments are very serious about this case. Union Home Minister Amit Shah-ji called me up yesterday evening and told me that he is sending a CBI team on a special flight to investigate the particular case." Shah quoted Singh as saying that this case has to be dealt with very seriously and those responsible have to be booked as per the law of the land and assured that “no one will be spared”.

  • Manipur Police said that security forces employed minimum force to control the protesters. "There were several protests and rallies in connection with the viral photos of dead bodies of two missing students. Miscreants in crowd used iron pieces and stones (marbles) against security forces. In retaliation security forces used minimum force to disperse the congregation and fired some tear gas shells in which some people got injured," the state police said in a social media post.
  • The Congress attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Manipur situation and demanded that he sack the chief minister as a first step to control the turmoil.

  • Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the northeastern state has turned into a "battlefield" because of the BJP and violence against women and children has been 'weaponised'. His remarks came after a clash broke out in the Singjamei area of Imphal on Tuesday night between RAF personnel and locals protesting the killing of two students.

  • Congress spokesperson Gaurav Gogoi expressed his party's condolences to the families of the two students. "Our demand is that the criminals should be caught as soon as possible and the government should take concrete action against them," he said, adding that in this hour of grief, they stand with the students, teachers and every citizen of Manipur.

  • More than 175 people have been killed and several hundreds injured since ethnic clashes broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
