Manipur: Mutilated Bodies Of 3 Youths Found Amid Fresh Round Of Violence In Ukhrul
Mutilated bodies of three youths were found after a firing incident at Kuki Thowai village in state's Ukhrul district on Friday.
In a fresh round of violence in ethnic strife-torn Manipur, mutilated bodies of three youths were found after a firing incident at Kuki Thowai village in state's Ukhrul district on Friday, news agency PTI reported citing police officials. According to the officials, sounds of heavy gunfire were heard from the village, which falls under Litan police station, early in the morning.
Officials further stated that the bodies of the three youths aged between 24 years and 35 years were found after a thorough search by police in the surrounding villages and forest areas. Bodies of the three persons bore injury marks apparently made using sharp knives and their limbs were also chopped off, they said, as reported by PTI.
More than 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3 when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.
Meanwhile, a four-member delegation headed by the CPI (M) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, left for Manipur for a two-day visit. Speaking on the visit to the northeastern state, Sitaram Yechury said the situation in the state is dangerous and it is necessary to control it for the unity of the country. "We are going to express solidarity with the people of Manipur and tell them India is with you. The Manipur CM should be sacked. We will do whatever is necessary to restore peace. The situation in the state is dangerous, and it is necessary to control it for the unity of the country," Sitaram Yechury said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
