Security Staffer Injured As Militants Ambush Biren Singh's Convoy

Earlier this week a security staffer was injured after Manipur CM N Biren Singh's convoy was ambushed by suspected militants in the state's Kangpokpi district.

The incident took place when the CM was on his way to the violence-hit district of Jiribam to take stock of the situation there. The security staffer suffered bullet injuries during the attack.

According to news agency PTI, multiple gunshots were fired at the convoy of the security forces, following which they retaliated.

Thereafter, a shootout started near Kotlen village situated along a stretch of National Highway-53 in Manipur.

The injured security staffer was admitted rushed to a nearby hospital in Imphal, where he underwent treatment.

After the firing incident, additional security forces were deployed in the affected areas.

"The situation is tense but under control in the wake of violent disturbances that broke out in Jiribam district in which miscreants torched two police pickets, a forest beat office... and several houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities,” Manipur Police said in a statement.

Manipur has been witnessing recurring bouts of violence ever since the ethnic clashes erupted between the Kuki and Meitei communities on May 3 last year. Since then over 219 people have been killed in the ethnic clashes.
