Section 144 Imposed In Assam’s Guwahati In Response To Reports Of Protest Rallies
Guwahati Police Commissionerate imposed Section 144 of the CrPC amid reports that groups of persons are planning to carry out demonstrations that could disturb peace and public order.
Guwahati: The Police Commissionerate of Assam's capital city late on Saturday issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the wake of reports that some specified and unspecified persons or groups of persons, or organisations and associations, may disturb the normal functioning of offices, movement of the public and flow of traffic in any part of the jurisdiction.
According to the order, the police learnt that such groups of persons or organisations and associations are planning to carry out agitation, demonstration, and shouting of slogans, in any part of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, which may cause a breach of peace and public order and may cause disturbance of peaceful movement of the public, traffic and normal activities of local residents and functioning of offices in the greater Guwahati area.

In a bid to take preventive measures and to ensure peaceful movement of the public, traffic, normal activities of the local residents, and functioning of offices in the greater Guwahati area, the Guwahati Police Commissionerate imposed section 144 of the CrPC, 1973, with effect from May 20, 2023 until further orders.
In accordance with the orders under section 144 of the CrPC, the Police prohibited the assembly of more than five persons, taking out processions, and shouting of slogans, in the entire areas under the jurisdiction covering three Police Districts of Police Commissionerate in Guwahati.
"Any person aggrieved by this order is, however, at liberty to appear before the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), Guwahati, for filing written objection, if any, for cancellation or modification of the order," the order further stated.
