Congress Prefers ‘Family First And Nation Last’: Assam Leader Resigns From Party, Joins BJP

In his resignation letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Poritush Roy alleged that the grand old party prefers ‘family first and nation last.’

Guwahati: Assam Congress leader, also a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Poritush Roy, resigned from the party on Saturday (November 11), saying that the grand old party is favouring only the ‘blue-blooded’ people. In his resignation letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Roy, who is the Working President of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC), said, “I would like to let you know that I would not be able to continue in this organisation as it is favouring only blue-blooded people. It is now felt that the voice of people like us, who come from lower strata of the society, is not heard in this organisation.”

Roy, a former National Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), said that the Congress prefers ‘family first and nation last.’

“While working in this organisation, I have realised that, from Dispur to Delhi, this organisation prefers family first and nation last. Hence, it has become practically impossible to work in this organisation and it will endanger the interest of the common people of the country,” Roy added in his resignation letter.

In yet another blow to the Indian National Congress (INC) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Nagaon district President of the Assam Pradesh Congress, Suresh Borah, resigned from the party on Thursday (November 9).

Later, both Poritush Roy and Suresh Borah joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a joining programme on Saturday.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X said, “I have always stressed on the fact that those who want to work for Bharat and Assam have no place in dynastic and family centric parties as only @BJP4India works in the interest of the nation.I welcome those who will be joining the party today in their goal of serving Maa Bharti.”
