US Airdrops Emergency Food Aid Into Gaza, White House Says ‘Will Help Address Dire Situation’

The US initiated airdrops after a distressing incident where more than 100 Palestinians lost their lives while attempting to access aid.

In a bid to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, US President Joe Biden authorised emergency aid operations following a chaotic and tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of over 100 Palestinians. On Saturday, U.S. military C-130 cargo planes conducted a significant airdrop operation, delivering essential food supplies to the beleaguered territory, news agency AP reported.

Three C-130 planes dispatched by Air Forces Central executed the airdrop, releasing 66 bundles containing approximately 38,000 meals over Gaza's southwest region. The Royal Jordanian Air Force, in coordination with the U.S., also conducted separate food airdrops in northern Gaza. The operation, a joint effort between U.S. Air Force and Royal Jordanian Air Force, aimed to ensure the safe delivery of aid to those in need, AP's report stated.

A statement from U.S. Central Command, posted on social media platform "X," confirmed the operation's success, stating, "The combined operation included U.S. Air Force and RJAF C-130 aircraft and respective Army Soldiers specialized in aerial delivery of supplies, built bundles and ensured the safe drop of food aid."

The decision to initiate airdrops came after a distressing incident where more than 100 Palestinians lost their lives while attempting to access aid. President Biden announced the commencement of air-dropping food supplies following this tragic event, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

White House On Necessity For Airdrops In Gaza

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby emphasised the necessity of these airdrops, stating, "The United States believes the airdrops will help address the dire situation in Gaza." However, Kirby also acknowledged that ground transport remains vital for effective aid distribution, despite the risks demonstrated during Thursday's events, the report mentioned.

The C-130 cargo aircraft, renowned for its capability to operate in challenging environments, was selected for the operation due to its capacity to airlift substantial cargo. Loadmasters secured the aid bundles onto pallets, which were then released from the aircraft with parachutes upon reaching the designated delivery zones.

This isn't the first instance of C-130s being utilised for humanitarian aid missions. In the past, these aircraft have been instrumental in delivering aid to various conflict zones, including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Haiti. Additionally, they play a crucial role in annual multinational operations, such as the "Operation Christmas Drop," providing vital supplies to remote regions.
