Ukraine Russia Conflict Live Updates: Zelensky To Address Urgent G-7 Meet After Russian Bombing Blitz

Background

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to address an urgent meet of the Group of Seven (G-7) nations after a fresh spate of bombing by Russia in key Ukrainian cities which left 14 dead and at least a 100 injured. Ukraine's army said Russia launched 84 cruise missiles, targeting energy facilities and busy intersections in Kyiv, in what President Vladimir Putin called a retaliation for an attack on a key bridge between Russia and the annexed Crimean Peninsula. The Russian move drew condemnation from the West and the European Union, with India expressing "deep concern" at the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and urged an "immediate cessation of hostilities."

Meanwhile, Russia's Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov has warned of further escalation of the conflict over supply of weapons to Ukraine by Washington and its allies. This came as US President Biden assured more supply of advanced air defence systems following the latest spate of missile strikes by Russia. "We call on the United States and its allies not to cross the 'red lines' they have approached. Stop pumping the Kyiv regime with lethal arms. It will only lead to new victims and destruction, as well as further prolonging the conflict," Antonov said.

Zelensky said the Russian attacks were deliberately timed to kill people and knock out Ukraine's power grid. The strikes have left swaths of the country with no electricity, water or heat. "They are trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the earth," Zelensky said. Ukraine's prime minister said 11 major infrastructure targets were hit in eight regions -- Lviv, Ternopil, Zhytomyr, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Kyiv. Germany said a building housing its consulate in Kyiv had been hit in Monday's strike. However, it had not been used since the war started nearly eight months ago, Reuters reported.

President Volodymyr Zelensky will ask the leaders of the G-7 group of nations to urgently supply Ukraine with air defence weapons in the meeting that he called after Russia unleashed its barrage of cruise missiles on Ukraine, Reuters reported. Ukrainians woke up to the wailing of new air raid sirens on Tuesday, with parts of the country left without power. Officials said 19 were killed on Monday in cruise missile strikes across the country, the biggest air raids since the start of the war.

Zelensky to Address Urgent G-7 Meet As Russian Missile Barrage shatters Ukraine

As multiple explosions rocked several key Ukrainian cities after Russian biggest missile strikes since February, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky is scheduled to address an urgent meeting of the Group of Seven (G-7) nations. Russia's response apparently came after a major blast severely damaged the Crimea Bridge, for which Ukraine has not claimed responsibility as of now. The fresh spate of attacks by Russia could spell an escalation of the conflict.
