Typhoon Doksuri Blows Off Roofs, Displaces Thousands Of People In Northern Philippines

At least one person died and thousands were displaced after a strong typhoon Doksuri lashed northern Philippine provinces on Wednesday with fierce wind and torrential rain, as reported by the news agency Reuters. The typhoon led to the displacement of more than 12,000 villagers, as reported by the news agency AP. Doksuri, which has a 700-kilometre-wide (435-mile-wide) band of wind and rain, slammed into Fuga Island off Aparri Town in Cagayan Province.
As per the officials, the typhoon blew tin roofs off rural houses and caused floods in low-lying villages. The people were left without power in the affected areas, the AP reported. As Doksuri approached, some 12,100 people were evacuated from high-risk coastal villages in Cagayan province. Schools and workplaces were closed as a precaution. Thousands of people in other northern provinces were also severely affected.
According to the weather forecasters, Doksuri became slightly weak but remained dangerous and lethal with sustained winds of 175 kph (109 mph) and gusts of up to 240 kph (149 mph), as reported by the AP. It was blowing over the coastal waters of the Babuyan Islands in Luzon Strait off Aparri town Wednesday morning, forecasters added.
The Meteorological Administration of China has labelled it a super typhoon. It is nearly 900 kilometres across and is likely to sustain strength as it continues its course towards Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, as reported by Reuters. The agency has sounded its storm alert and warned the second-highest tier and the manufacturing hub of Guangdong province of what can be the worst storm in a decade.
As of 8 a.m. (0000 GMT), Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said that in the last three hours, the centre of the typhoon was close to hovering and at a standstill, Reuters reported. However, China has been expecting the typhoon to arrive on Friday.

In the Philippines, the national disaster agency said that at least one person has drowned in the province of Rizal so far. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, more than 4,000 passengers were stranded at ports across the country after sea travel was suspended, as reported by Reuters.
