Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: President Rajapaksa Invites Opposition To Join Unity Govt After Cabinet Resigns

Rajapaksa in his statement said that the economic crisis in the country is due to various global factors and the issue should be addressed democratically, which is in the interest of the country.

New Delhi: A day after cabinet ministers resigned in Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Monday invited opposition parties to accept ministerial berths and help find a solution to the turmoil the country is going through.

"The Sri Lankan President has invited all political parties representatives in Parliament to take up ministerial posts and work together to find a solution to the national crisis," read the official statement released by the President, reported news agency ANI.

Rajapaksa in his statement said that the economic crisis in the country is due to various global factors and the issue should be addressed democratically, which is in the interest of the country.

"Current crisis is due to several economic and global factors. As one of the leading democracies in Asia, it needs to be addressed within framework of democracy itself. Together we must work together in national interest for benefit of citizens and future generations," the statement by the President read.

Earlier on Sunday, All 26 Cabinet ministers other than President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his elder brother Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from office with immediate effect.

According to news agency PTI, Education Minister and Leader of the House, Dinesh Gunawardena informed that the Cabinet Ministers handed over their resignations to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Three other members of the powerful Rajapaksa family - finance minister Basil, agriculture minister Chamal and sports minister Namal, all resigned amid mounting pressure, reported news agency AFP.
