Shinzo Abe Death HIGHLIGHTS: Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died on Friday after being shot at a campaign event in the Nara region in western Japan.
According to Makoto Morimoto of the local fire department, Abe was shot and brought to a prefectural hospital while experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest.
At 12:20 PM, Shinzo Abe was taken to the hospital. "When I got there, he was in cardiac arrest. The process of resuscitation was used. Unfortunately, he passed away at 5:03 PM," Emergency medicine specialist Hidetada Fukushima, Nara Medical University hospital said.
Over the news of the attack on Abe, world leaders have voiced astonishment and worry.
The story went on to say that a suspect had also been detained by Japanese law enforcement for attempted murder. According to reports, a gun had been taken away from the man, who seemed to be in his 40s.
According to the Japan Times, the 67-years old politician was shot by a man from behind when the former was making a stump speech in Nara on Friday morning at 11:30 am after which the unidentified assailant was taken into custody by the Police. Japan's public broadcaster NHK news said that its reporter on the scene heard two consecutive bangs during the speech and saw Abe bleeding.
A 41-year old man, Tetsuya Yamagami has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for shooting at Abe, reported Japanese media house NHK quoting police sources.
Hailing from a wealthy political family, he was elected to Parliament in 1993 after his father's demise. Abe had rose to fame for adopting strong stance against North Korea after Japanese citizens were kidnapped by Pyongyang.
The former Japanese premier was conferred with India's second highest civilian honour — Padma Vibhushan — for his exceptional and distinguished service in public affairs.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday expressed shock over the assassination of former prime minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and described him as a "great friend" of India who did a lot to deepen ties between the two nations.
She said Abe will be sorely missed.
"I am shocked at the assassination of Mr. Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan," Gandhi said in a condolence message.
"For many years, Mr. Abe was a great friend and well-wisher of India. He did much to expand and deepen the bilateral relationship between our two countries. I recall my meeting with him very fondly and vividly. It is a huge misfortune that has befallen Japan and indeed, the entire international community. He will be sorely missed," she said.
