Pakistan Army Chief Denies Claims Of Martial Law's Imposition, Dismisses Rumours Of Disunity: Report

The Pakistan Military refuted the claims of the imposition of martial laws and dismissed the rumours of disunity in the army.

The Pakistan Military on Friday refuted the reports of martial law's imposition after four days of political chaos that erupted due to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest, in which army’s installations were also targeted. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry while talking to Geo News said that the imposition of martial law is out of the question.

Chaudhry said, “I want to say very clearly that General Asim Munir and the army’s leadership wholeheartedly support democracy and will continue to do so. The imposition of martial law is out of the question. The army chief and the army’s senior leadership completely believe in democracy.”

The spokesperson rubbished the reports of army officers resigning due to the ongoing chaos. He said, “Despite all-out efforts of internal miscreants and external enemies, the army remains united under Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir. The dreams of creating division within the army will remain dreams. Neither anyone has resigned nor disobeyed any order.”

His statement comes just days after former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan along with his supporters, raised the stakes by attacking military targets and torching the residence of the corps commander in Lahore. They attacked the entrance to the army's headquarters in Rawalpindi. Post Khan's arrest, violent protests broke out leading to the death of a dozen and injuring several. This was followed by a crackdown on the party by law enforcement agencies and arrests of workers and top leaders.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Tuesday post the attacks on army installations said that the day when chaos gripped Pakistan after Khan's arrest, would go down in history as a 'dark chapter' for the nation.

The ISPR accused the PTI leaders of being “hypocrites” for inciting their workers against the armed forces on the one hand and praising the military on the other in an attempt to overshadow their criticism on the other.

The turmoil has come to rest temporarily as the Islamabad High Court provided blanket relief to the PTI chief and barred authorities from arresting him till Monday. After Monday, the government said it could arrest Khan, “if need be”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while responding to Khan's fresh salvo against the army chief General Munir, said that the accusations of the PTI chief reflected his 'cheap mentality' towards the armed forces. He said, “His statement proves that he is the mastermind of the May 9 events.”
