People in the Delhi-NCR and other parts of India were jolted by a major tremor on Friday night with its epicentre in western Nepal. The epicentre of the quake was located at Lamidanda area in Jajarkot district with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale, according to officials at the National Earthquake Measurement Centre.
A strong tremor was felt in capital Kathmandu and surrounding areas, around 500 kilometres from the epicentre.
While no information on the damage caused by the quake was immediately known, later reports stated that around 69 people were killed in Nepal.
Local officials said it had not been possible to establish contact in the area near the epicentre in Jajarkot, scattered in remote hills with a population of 1,90,000.
Nepal Prime Minister Pushp Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' expressed his grief over the loss of lives and instructed the security agencies for immediate rescue and relief operations. Later in the day, he reached the affected aread and met with the families of the victims.
According to a Kathmandu Post report, the areas that suffered the most damage were Jajarkot, West Rukum, and Ramidanda.
55 casualties were reported from Jajarkot alone which included Deputy Mayor of Nalgad Municipality Sarita Singh, while 55 others were reported injured as per the report.
The death toll on West Rukum was 36, according to preliminary data, said Deputy Superintendent of Police of West Rukum district Namaraj Bhattarai. Thirty-six people were reported dead in Aathbiskot Municipality, and eight more in Sanibheri Rural Municipality.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief on the loss of lives and assured all possible assistance to the neighbouring Himalyan nation.
"Deeply saddened by loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and we wish the injured a quick recovery," said PM Modi in a post on X.

Even as rescue operations continued in the Jajarkot district in western Nepal, the authorities shifted scores of injured persons to multiple hospitals in the foothills and some of them may be airlifted to India, PTI reported.
