Yeti Airlines' 9N-ANC ATR-72 which took off from the capital Kathmandu crashed near Pokhara, where it was to land, with 72 people onboard according to several media reports. As per the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the plane took off at 10:33 am from Kathmandu.
While landing at the Pokhara airport, the aircraft crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport. There were a total of 68 passengers and four crew members on board.
Of the 72 passengers onboard, 52 were Nepalese and 13 were foreign nationals including 5 Indians, 4 Russians, 2 Koreans and one Irish, Argentinian and French national each. Two infants were also onboard.
The pilots of the Yeti Airlines aircraft that crashed in Nepal's resort city of Pokhara may have failed to fully deploy the wing flaps while attempting to land, leading to a stall, a media report said on Thursday. On January 15, a Yeti Airlines aircraft crashed into a gorge near the newly-built airport in Pokhara, killing 72 all on board, including five Indians, in the country's worst air disaster in 30 years.
An aircraft coming to land has the flaps at the back of the wings fully down to provide more control at low speed and prevent stalling, the Kathmandu Post reported.
The exact reason behind the crash will be known only after an examination of the flight data recorder, or the black box, the report added. A nine-member team from France is also enquiring with the airlines' staff and concerned authorities in Pokhara to understand details of the ATR-72 aircraft crash, according to an official from Yeti Airlines.
Meanwhile, Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' on Thursday met with the grieving families of the people who were killed in the Yeti Airlines plane crash in the resort city of Pokhara. Prachanda reached the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital to meet the families. Expressing his condolences to the families, the prime minister directed the hospital authorities to speed up the identification of the bodies, make the process scientific and hand over the bodies to the relatives soon, his office said.
70 Bodies Found So Far, 48 Are Being Taken To Kathmandu By Helicopter
70 bodies have been found so far from the crash site where a Nepal plane met with an accident. A total of 72 people were on board the plane.
22 bodies have been identified which will be handed over to their family, rest of the 48 bodies are being taken to Kathmandu by helicopter.
Two bides have been handed over after doctors conducted a postmortem. Rest 20 will be given to the family members once the process of postmortem is completed.
