G20 Bali Summit 2022 HIGHLIGHTS: Hello and welcome to the ABP Live blog to find all the latest news and updates about the G20 Summit 2022. The annual G20 Summit began on Tuesday in Bali, with leaders from across the world expected to debate issues brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and more recently elevated by Russia's conflict in Ukraine during the course of the following two days.
Prior to the summit's official beginning, Indonesian President Joko Widodo greeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the meeting location.
The Group of Twenty (G20) Summit is taking place in Indonesia's Bali province from November 15 and 16 where leader of 20 countries — representing around 85 per cent of the global GDP, and about two-thirds of the world population — to hold discussions on key issues of global concern under the theme of “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”.
This G20 summit is also important because India is slated to hold the presidency from December 1, 2022 for a one-year period, and the presidency handover will take place during this Bali summit.
During the summit, the world leaders will hold discussions on important issues of contemporary relevance which will include global economy, energy, environment, agriculture, health and digital transformation etc.
US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will also attend the Summit and hold bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit.
Ahead of the meeting between Jinping and Biden, Beijing has said that it hopes to bring its relations with Washington “back on track”, reported news agency AFP.
Chinese Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that China wants "mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation" with the US, the news agency reported.
China’s statement came hours after White House said that Biden wants to reopen communication, set “guard rails” in talks with Xi.
President Joe Biden wants his meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Indonesia to repair lines of communication and help establish "guard rails" to keep the competing superpowers from veering into conflict, said US officials, quoted by the news agency.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the meeting and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will represent the Russia in the summit.
The G20 nations include: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.
