7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Indonesia's Western Sumatra, Tsunami Alert Issued

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday hit Indonesia's western province of West Sumatra. Indonesian geophysics agency BKMG has issued a Tsunami warning.

An earthquake of 7.3 magnitude jolted Indonesia's western province of West Sumatra early Tuesday after which Indonesia's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency (BKMG) issued a Tsunami warning. The earthquake struck the area at around 3:00 am Jakarta Time (08:00 pm GMT Monday) with the focus being on the Mentawai Islands district which is 177 kilometres away. The depth of the tremors was recorded at 84 km under the seabed, reported news agency Xinhua.

The meteorology agency issued a Tsunami warning since the tremors of this earthquake had the potential of triggering giant waves.

7.2-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts New Zealand's Kermadec Islands

In a similar event, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude jolted New Zealand's Kermadec Islands on Monday, as per the National Centre for Seismology. The earthquake occurred at 6:11 am.

NCS tweeted, "Earthquake of Magnitude:7.2, Occurred on 24-04-2023, 06:11:52 IST, Lat: -29.95 & Long: -178.02, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Kermadec Islands, New Zealand," the National Centre for Seismology informed,. The earthquake's depth in the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand was 10 km, with latitude -29.95 and longitude -178.02 being its coordinates.

Earthquake Of 7.0 Magnitude Jolts Indonesia: US Geological Survey

The US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 7.0 earthquake 96 km north of Tuban, Indonesia, on April 14. According to Xinhua News Agency, the epicentre of the tremor, which struck the region at 09:55:45 GMT, was initially located at 6.0255 degrees south latitude and 112.0332 degrees east longitude. Its depth was 594.028 km.

The quake occurred in the sea north of the Indonesian island of Java, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) on Friday, AFP reported.

Earlier this month, according to a local authority, an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Indonesia's western province of North Sumatra, causing no damage or injuries, IANS reported.

The Indonesian meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency BMKG had not issued a tsunami warning since the quake's shocks did not cause massive waves.
