China’s Growing Military Clout Over Taiwan Contests US Military Domination In Indo-Pacific: Report

New Delhi: China’s provocative actions against Taiwan this month are seen part of psychological operations by Beijing to challenge the West over self-declared control of the democratically governed island.

Apparently exhibiting its military capacity to take over Taiwan by force, China ramped up aerial incursions over Taiwan’s air defence identification zone with 149 sorties by People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) fighters and nuclear capable bombers in the first four days of October.

Beijing demonstrated its military clout before an exercising armada of the US-UK-Japan warships in the vicinity.

The aircraft carriers USS Ronald Reagan, USS Carl Vinson, HMS Elizabeth along with Japanese, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian ships are exercising between Taiwan and the coast of Okinawa.

China’s provocative maneuvers against Taiwan, according to top diplomats, seem to be directed at the domestic audience rather than serious war threat to Taipei.

The military response by China, facing a slew of domestic challenges, including a biggest real estate company drowning in debt to power crunch, inflation and slowdown in manufacturing sector, is aimed at diverting public attention and fire up nationalistic sentiments.

The aim of the recent aerial intrusions, as per Beijing watchers, is to convey the signal that no one will come to Taipei’s support if China decides to militarily take over the strategic island.

The ramping up of aerial intrusions is also a message to the US allies in the region mainly Japan and Australia - the key partners in the Quad grouping.

The rising military clout of PLA, particularly in the sea dimension, is posing a threat to the US domination of Indo-Pacific as well as forcing Japan to move towards shedding of its pacificist doctrine, Hindustan Times reported.

If China outmaneuvers the US on Taiwan, then Washington’s credibility will take a further hit after the withdrawal disaster in Afghanistan post the Taliban taking control of the war-ravaged nation.

It is reasonable to assume that objectives of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)  are Senkaku Islands and so-called South Tibet land dispute with India after Taiwan as state sovereignty, territorial integrity and national reunification are part of declared Chinese core interests in 2011.
