Maharashtra CM Visits Coastal Regions After Heavy Rainfall Causes Waterlogging, Highlights Steps To Help Locals

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited coastal areas affected by heavy rains and directed officials in the government department to ensure that people do not face any problems during rain.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday morning visited coastal areas after heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai. He was at a Milan Subway, which received about 70mm of rainfall on Saturday night just within an hour. He said traffic movement has not stopped as a water storage tank has been built in the area and the floodgate has also been installed here. His visit took place after Mumbai and its suburbs received heavy rains in the last 24 hours, resulting in waterlogging at various places and affecting vehicular movement on some roads, officials said on Sunday.

During his visit to these areas, he also directed the department to ensure that people do not face any problems during rain, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Mumbai is expected to receive more showers in the near future, reported news agency PTI on Sunday.

Meanwhile, three persons were injured after the roof of a restaurant collapsed due to heavy rains in Maharashtra's Thane city, said civic officials said on Sunday.

Thane Municipal Corporation's Disaster Control Cell Chief Yasin Tadvi said the incident took place late Saturday night at the restaurant located on Ghodbunder Road, reported PTI. He said, two women and a man received injuries and were rushed to a nearby private hospital.

The city received 58.90 mm of rainfall in the 12-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, the official said. Many other localities in Ulhasnagar township were also affected due to the heavy downpour on Saturday, as per Thane district authorities.

Even the neighbouring Palghar district was lashed by heavy rains on Saturday, which caused water-logging in many low-lying areas.

Multiple areas in Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Badlapur in Thane district were inundated and people had to make their way through knee-deep water on Saturday evening.

In a separate incident, a portion of a building collapsed in Rajawadi Colony, Mumbai's Ghatkopar (East). Four residents of the building were rescued while two are still stranded in the building. A rescue operation is in progress.
