Background
The Uniform Civil Code Bill has been tabled in the Uttarakhand Assembly today after getting clearance from the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami-led cabinet. The four-day special session of the assembly was called for the passage of the legislation which aims at bringing uniformity in civil laws across all sections and religions.
Ahead of the tabling of the bill, Dhami tweeted, "Today is a special day for Devbhoomi Uttarakhand in the direction of giving meaning to Article 44 of the Constitution of India as per the expectations of the country's Constitution makers. The Constitution of the country inspires us for equality and harmony and the commitment to implement the Uniform Civil Code law will act as a bridge to realize this inspiration.
Uttarakhand will become the first state in the counrt to adopt UCC since Indepence is the once the bill is passed in the assembly. However, UCC is operational in Goa since the Portuguese rule.
Uniform Civil Code for Uttarakhand was one of the most prominent poll promised by CM Dhami ahead of the 2022 assembly polls. He constituted a panel headed by retired Supreme Court Ranjana Prakash Desai to prepare a draft for UCC. The which final draft ran into 740 pages across four volumes was submitted to Chief Minister Dhami recentlyiThe security around the Assembly premises has been significantly heightened for the special session extending till February 8.
Meanwhile, Congress locked horns with the government for waiving the question hour and staged a walked out of a meeting to protest against the decision.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami says, "With the guidance and inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today we are going to fulfill the 'resolution' that we had expressed to the people of the state in the 2022 assembly elections to bring Uniform Civil Code law in the state. Our government, taking all sections of the society along with full responsibility, has presented the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the Assembly. That historic moment is near for Devbhoomi when Uttarakhand will become a strong pillar of respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "One India, Best India".
'MP Govt Will Study Uttarakhand's Draft And Decide': MP Cabinet Minister On UCC
“Uttarakhand government has taken a step toward UCC (by tabling the Bill in Assembly). In future, Madhya Pradesh government will study their (Uttarakhand’s) draft and will decide towards implementing UCC in the state,” says MP cabinet minister Inder Singh Parmar on UCC.
