Mutiple Earthquakes Jolt Himalayan Region As Ladakh, Jammu-Kashmir Experience Tremors

Leh, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir's Katra experienced tremours due to three earthquakes today. No casualties were reported.

Three earthquakes shook the Himalayan region early morning on Sunday, among them the first hit the Union Territory of Ladakh at 2:50 am. The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.1 on the Richter scale at a depth of 10 km. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was measured at 295 kilometres northeast of the Leh district of Ladakh. The depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the surface at a latitude of 35.85 degrees north and a longitude of 80.08 degrees east. No casualties were reported.

"Earthquake of Magnitude:4.1, Occurred on 18-06-2023, 02:16:49 IST, Lat: 35.85 & Long: 80.08, Depth: 10 Km , Location: 295km NE of Leh, Ladakh," tweeted NCS.

Following this another earthquake struck, Jammu and Kashmir's Katra which too measured 4.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred at around 3:50 am at a depth of 11 km. There was no report of any damage reported from anywhere.

The National Center for Seismology stated in a tweet, "Earthquake of Magnitude:4.1, Occurred on 18-06-2023, 03:50:29 IST, Lat: 32.96 & Long: 75.79, Depth: 11 Km,Location: 80km E of Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, India". 

Then Leh experienced another earthquake of magnitude 4.3 at 8:28 AM.

Earlier, on Wednesday, amid the looming threat of Cyclone Biparjoy, an earthquake struck Kutch. The quake, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, struck 5 kilometres west-southwest from Bhachau, Kutch.

The epicentre of the quake, which took place at 5.15 p.m., was located at a latitude of 23.291 and a longitude of 70.293, with a depth of 18.5 kilometres, informed Gujarat government's Institute of Seismological Research.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) is the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring of earthquake activity in the country.
