After Pregnant Elephant's Death In Kerala, Another One Dies After Being Shot At In Tamil Nadu; 2 Brothers Arrested
Arrested brother have confessed that they shot the elephant, which was entering the land and destroying the produce.
New Delhi: After the death of a pregnant elephant in Kerala in May sparked a public outrage including celebrities who expressed anguish over the heinous crime, another shocking death of an elephant has come to the fore in which the pachyderm has been shot dead by two brothers in Coimbatore. In a separate incident, two more elephants were found dead but the reasons for their deaths are yet to be ascertained.

A 25-year-old female elephant was found dead while bleeding from the left ear at Kandiyur in Mettupalayam, about 45 km from Coimbatore, according to the news agency PTI. Officials from the Forest Department and a veterinarian rushed to the spot.
In the post-mortem, it was found that the elephant was shot dead, as a sharp-edged metal piece was found pierced in its brain, through the left ear.
In this case, two brothers were arrested in connection with the Kandiyur case, for shooting the elephant to death in their farm in Mettupalayam, about 45 km from Coimbatore.
They are said to have confessed that they shot the elephant, which was entering the land and destroying the produce, according to the officials who spoke to PTI.
Apart from recovering the dead body of 25-year-old elephant, forest officials found about the death of another female elephant at Sirumugai, some 20 km away.
However, this 20-year old elephant has not been keeping well. However, the real cause of death will be known after the autopsy.
According to PTI, yet another carcass of a male elephant was found in a private bamboo resort around Masinaguri in Nilgiris district. The death appears to be due to electrocution as the elephant might have tried to pull bamboo shoots and might have touched a live wire or fence. The tusks are intact,
Earlier, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar has said that the Central government has taken a very serious note of the killing of a pregnant elephant in Kerala and an investigation will be undertaken to find out the culprits behind the incident.
The 15-year-old female wild elephant died after consuming a pineapple filled with firecrackers which exploded in her mouth. The elephant was spotted near a river where she was standing with her trunk and mouth inside the water possibly to assuage the pain.
