Will Arvind Kejriwal Get Bail Today? Supreme Court To Resume Hearing On Delhi CM's Plea

The Delhi High Court on August 5, dismissed Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by CBI in alleged liquor policy scam.

The Supreme Court will resume hearing today the bail petition filed by the jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi Liquor Policy case.

In previous hearing, on August 23, the Supreme Court had deferred till September 5 hearing on Arvind Kejriwal's pleas seeking bail and challenging the arrest by the CBI in the alleged excise policy scam.

A bench of justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will resume hearing today. The Delhi CM after his arrest has often reported a drop in sugar and wieght loss while in Tihar jail. While praying for interim bail, the counsel for Delhi CM has told the court that he is facing health issues inside the jail.

The top court on August 14 refused to grant interim bail to the jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi Liquor Policy case. The top court issued notice to CBI in the bail plea and challenge to arrest filed by the Delhi CM.

Senior Advocate Abhishek M Singhvi had told the apex court that there are three bail orders in Kejriwal's favour. One in May, one in June and then a regular bail by trial court in Enforcement Directorate (ED) case which was later stayed by the hoigh court.

Singhvi repeated his arguments that he made in the Delhi high court and said that the arrest made by CBI was an "insurance arrest," as they had realised that Kejriwal will secure bail in the ED case.

Singhvi pressed for an interim bail while the top court hears Kejriwal's plea against CBI arrest. Singhvi, cited Kejriwal's health issued while seeking interim bail. However, the top court denied that relief today and said that they are not inclined to grant interim bail. However, it issued notice to CBI, seeking its reply to Arvind Kejriwal's plea.

The matter was then listed for next hearing on August 23.

The Delhi High Court on August 5, dismissed Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by CBI in alleged liquor policy scam. The high court also dismissed the interim bail plea with liberty to approach the trial court.

"It cannot be said that the arrest was without any justiciable reason. So far as bail application is concerned it is disposed of with liberty to approach the trial court," the high court ruled.

A bench of Justice Neena Bansal Krishna dismissed both the petitions filed by Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the CBI.

Arvind Kejriwal has secured interim bail from the Supreme Court in the ED case. But, he stays behind bars as he was also arrested by the CBI in connection with the Delhi Liquor Policy case.

Earlier a trial court had granted regular bail to Arvind Kejriwal in the ED case. However, the same order was stayed by Delhi High Court. That case is still pending in the high court.
