New Delhi: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on Independence Day, Congress interim President, Sonia Gandhi cornered the PM saying “Indian National Congress will oppose the wrong statements made on historical facts for political benefits and every attempt to question great national leaders like Gandhi-Nehru-Patel-Azad on the basis of lies.”
Her statement came as she extended her greetings for Independence Day.
“In the last 75 years, India has made a global mark in science, education, health, information technology and other areas through the sheer hard work of talented Indians..," read the statement by Sonia Gandhi who is currently under isolation after she tested positive for Covid-19.

"We have achieved a lot in the last 75 years but the current self-centred government is adamant about proving insignificant the great sacrifices of freedom fighters and glorious achievements of the country, this cannot be accepted..," she said further.
Sonia’s remark came a day after a row erupted following after the Bharatiya Janata Party dropped Jawaharlal Nehru’s name from Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in Karnataka.
On Sunday, the saffron party had shared a video blaming Nehru for the 1947 partition which triggered a sharp reply from Congress leader Jairam Ramesh who said that the BJP indulged in this politics of Partition only to weaponise one of the most traumatic historical events.
Putting the blame on Savarkar, the Congress leader said, "The truth is Savarkar originated 2 nation theory and Jinnah perfected it. Sardar Patel wrote, ’I felt that if we did not accept partition, India would be split into many bits and would be completely ruined.”
Senior leaders of the Congress remained absent from the Independence Day celebrations as they unfurled the national flag at party headquarters after Sonia Gandhi tested positive for coronavirus.
As per news agency PTI citing sources, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi has also isolated himself after his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tested Covid positive earlier this week.
While Vadra said on August 10 that she had contracted Covid, Sonia Gandhi tested positive three days later.
