Republic TV's Arnab Goswami Walks Out Of Taloja Jail After SC Grants Interim Bail

Goswami came out of the jail around 8.30 pm and said that he was thankful to the Supreme Court for granting him bail in the case.

Mumbai: Hours after Supreme Court granted interim bail to Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami in the 2018 abetment to suicide case, the later was released from Mumbai's Taloja jail on Wednesday evening. The apex court, earlier in the day, granted bail to Goswami and two others in the case saying it will be a "travesty of justice" if personal liberty is curtailed. Goswami was arrested on November 4 from his Lower Parel residence in Mumbai and taken to Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district. He and the two other arrested accused were later produced before a magistrate who refused to send them in police custody and remanded them in judicial custody till November 18. While granting bail to Goswami and two others, the top court noted that it is deeply concerned if courts do not preserve human liberty and if constitutional courts do not protect liberty, then who will? A two-judge bench comprising Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee noted that if somebody does not like a TV channel then that person should not watch it. I myself prefer to cuddle up with a good book, he added. Arnab and two others were arrested last week in connection with the suicide of architect Anvay Naik and his mother. The top court, pulling up the Maharashtra government over Arnab's arrest, said the victim is entitled to a fair investigation and the investigation should go on, but if the state targets individuals on this basis then let a strong message go out. Arnab had moved the top court challenging the Bombay High Court order which turned declined to entertain his plea seeking interim bail and the reopening of the case. The accused were arrested by Alibaug police in Maharashtra's Raigad district on November 4 in connection with the suicide of architect-interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother in 2018 over alleged non-payment of dues to them by the companies of the accused.
