Last year, the ceremony, which is conducted by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Wagah-Attari border every year on January 26, was stopped in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. This retreat ceremony was started in 1959 at Joint Check Post (JCP) at the Wagah-Attari border.
Notably, the officials of the BSF and Pakistan Rangers exchanged sweets and pleasantries today.

For the last two years, the exchange of sweets was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2018, BSF skipped the tradition over growing incidents of ceasefire violations across the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border.
The ceremony marks the formal culmination of the Republic day celebration aimed at instilling a sense of patriotism in the visitors.
The ceremony is all about the zeal and patriotism of the people of India and it is always said that the Attari-Wagah border is a must-visit place for the people to celebrate.
