PM Modi arrived at the National War Memorial before heading to Kartavya Path commencing the Republic Day celebrations. At National War Memorial PM Modi was received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh where the homage ceremony took place. Later, PM Modi and other dignitaries reached the saluting dias where he welcomed President Droupadi Murmu and chief guest, President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi extended his greetings to the people of the nation.
"Many wishes for the Republic Day. This time this occasion is also special because we are celebrating it during the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. We wish to move ahead unitedly to make the dreams of the great freedom fighters of the country come true.
Happy Republic Day to all fellow Indians!" he tweeted.
Prime Minister Modi had last year on Republic Day wore a cap from Uttarakhand along with Brahmakamal, which is the state flower of Uttarakhand. He uses this flower whenever he does pooja at Kedarnath.
The attire which consisted of traditional white kurta pajama coupled with Nehru jacket was completed with a stole from Manipur.
In the year 2020, PM Modi had sported a saffron 'bandhej' headgear with a tail for the 71st Republic Day. Turbans have always remained a highlight of the prime minister's sartorial choices at Independence Day and Republic Day events.
