PM Modi Writes To Ex-Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif Condoling His Mother's Demise
The condolence letter was handed over to Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif by Gaurav Ahluwalia, Charge d'Affaires at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to extend condolences on the demise of his mother Begum Shamim Akhtar, who died on November 22. The condolence letter was handed over to Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif by Gaurav Ahluwalia, Charge d'Affaires at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

After receiving the letter from the Prime Minister, Ahluwalia informed Sharif’s daughter through a letter about the Indian premier's missive.
"I am forwarding to you a letter from the Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi addressed to the former Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan His Excellency Muhammad Nawaz Sharif,” Ahluwalia wrote in his letter
"It is requested that the letter may be conveyed to His Excellency Nawaz Sharif," he added.
In the letter, PM Modi conveyed "heartfelt condolences" to the former premier over his mother's death and added that her warmth and simplicity touched her.

"Dear Mian Sahib, I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of your mother Begum Shamim Akhtar. My heartfelt condolences are with you in this hour of intense grief,” PM Modi wrote in his letter.
"Her simplicity and warmth were indeed very touching,” the letter further read.
Begum Shamim Akhtar, the mother of Nawaz Sharif, passed away in Britain on November 22. Her body was later flown to Pakistan and she was buried at the family's Jati Umra estate in Lahore.
In December 2015, PM Modi paid a brief surprise visit to Lahore on his way back to India from Kabul. He was received by Nawaz and both leaders went to Raiwind from Lahore.
The Prime Minister then attended Nawaz's grand daughter's wedding ceremony at his residence and held a brief meeting with his Pakistani counterpart at the time before departing for New Delhi.
