PM Modi, Shah remember 1975 emergency as 'darkest chapters in India’s history'; Mamata speaks up

Commenting on the National Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his social media and wrote, “India salutes all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted the Emergency. India’s democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset”.

New Delhi: On 44th anniversary of 1975 national emergency implemented by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Bharatiya Janta Party on Tuesday took potshots at Congress party for allegedly murdering “Indian constitution” and paid salutes to those who resisted the same. Commenting on the National Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his social media and wrote, “India salutes all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted the Emergency. India’s democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset”. Even Home Minister Amit Shah took to his Twitter and said “It was only today in 1975 that Indian constitution was murdered for personal political gains; and accordingly the rights were snatched from the countrymen, newspapers were sealed. Lakhs of patriots faced brutality in order to reinstate the constitution”. “I bow to all those soldiers” party Chief added. Even Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the Emergency declared by Gandhi and said “The declaration of Emergency on June 25, 1975 and the incidents that followed mark as one of the darkest chapters in India’s history”. “On this day, we the people of India should always remember the importance of upholding the integrity our institutions and the Constitution” he added. BJP's working President JP Nadda said in a tweet that the Emergency period was a "black blot". "In 1975, on this day, democracy was murdered by the Congress party to remain in power. A grateful nation remembers thousands of unsung heroes from Bharatiya Jan Sangh and RSS, who led the anti-Emergency movement from the front" he tweeted. West Bengal CM Mamata hits back: Hitting back at BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said "Today is the anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975". "For the last five years, the country went through a ‘Super Emergency’. We must learn our lessons from history and fight to safeguard the democratic institutions in the country" Kejriwal calls for resolution: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on the other hand called for a resolution to never allow repetition of an Emergency-like situation in the country. "This very day 34 years ago India witnessed one of the biggest assault on its democracy with the imposition of emergency by the then prime minister. Let us resolve never to allow repetition of subversion of the Constitution of this great democracy," Kejriwal tweeted.
