Over 1,300 fined on first day of odd-even-II

New Delhi:  Over 1,300 persons were penalised for violating the odd-even car rationing on the first day of its second phase's implementation in the national capital on Friday. While 884 motorists were punished by Delhi Traffic Police, challans to as many as 427 persons were issued by the enforcement unit of Delhi Transport department, taking the total figure to 1,311, senior officials said. Under the fortnight-long scheme, private cars having odd registration numbers can ply only on odd dates and the even numbers on even dates, subjected to a set of exemptions. The rules under the scheme are applicable between 8 AM and 8 PM, except on Sundays. The highest number of challans was recorded in the southern part of the city, followed by west and central Delhi. Around a hundred persons were challaned in the Lutyens' zone, officials said. The first challan of the day was issued at ITO intersection in central Delhi at around 9 AM. The violator turned out to be a resident of Bijnor in Uttar Prdaesh, who was heading towards Uttarakhand. He claimed that he was unaware of the norms, a senior traffic official said. The motorists challaned today were from states like Haryana, UP and Rajasthan. Meanwhile, Delhi Metro today recorded a ridership of 16.38 lakh, a DMRC official said.Delhi government has prepared a plan to implement odd-even scheme with deployment of 5,000 civil defence volunteers, 400 ex-servicemen and 2,000 traffic police personnel. The government has formed 120 teams of the enforcement wing of transport department which will prosecute those violating the odd-even rule with imposition of a fine of Rs 2,000 on errant car drivers. 2,000 officials of Delhi Traffic Police will be deployed on roads daily. The traffic department has identified 200 intersections in the city where their personnel will be deployed in teams, with their sizes depending upon the volume of traffic in those intersections.
