Odisha: Farmer Dana Majhi’s Daughter Clears Matriculation Exam With Flying Colours From KISS

In August 2016, Majhi had walked for 10kms with his wife’s body on his shoulder from Bhawanipatna when he was not given a vehicle from the district hospital.

Kalahandi: Farmer Dana Majhi’s daughter Chandini Majhi has cleared the Matriculation Examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha. Majhi has been a well-known name since August 2016, when he had carried his deceased wife on his shoulders for 10kms, since then his life has changed drastically.

In August 2016, Majhi had walked for 10kms with his wife’s body on his shoulder from Bhawanipatna when he was not given a vehicle from the district hospital. His deceased wife, Amang Dei died of tuberculosis in the hospital. Majhi said that the hospital authorities refused to help him transport the body to their house. Majhi made headlines when he and his then 12-year-old daughter met the local television channel.

A resident of Melghara village under Thuamul-Rampur Block of Kalahandi district, Chandini had received a helping hand from Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS after the unfortunate incident in 2016. Dr. Achutya helped Majhi’s daughters to pursue their studies at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. Chandini along with her two sisters had been enrolled in KISS to complete their secondary education.

The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has made notable success in the Secondary Examination conducted by the Odisha Board of Secondary Education. KISS achieved a cent percent result while the statewide pass percentage was 97.89.

15-year-old Mohan Charan Raita of the Saura tribe of Gajapati district has secured an aggregate of 540, making him the topper of the batch. As many as 629 students have passed the exam out of which 573 were from primitive tribes like Didai, Juang, Khadia, Lodha, and Bonda, securing more than 70 percent of the total marks. Approximately 1900 students had appeared for their Secondary Board Exam this year.

When asked about Chandini and KISS’s result, Dr. Achutya said, ‘It has been possible due to earnest efforts of the faculties, and staff of KISS as well as the sheer diligence and dedication of the students.’
