NCP MP Tariq Anwar resigns over Sharad Pawar's statement defending PM Modi on Rafale deal

Defending PM Modi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had recently stated that people do not have doubts over PM’s intentions.

New Delhi: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and a Member of Parliament Tariq Anwar on Friday resigned from the party in protest against party president Sharad Pawar over his statement defending Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Rafale deal. The NCP national general secretary also resigned from the post of Lok Sabha MP, reported news agency ANI. Anwar was the Lok Sabha MP from Katihar in Bihar and is considered to be close to Pawar. Defending PM Modi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had recently stated that people do not have doubts over PM’s intentions. In an interview to a Marathi news channel, Pawar had said the opposition's demand to share technical details relating to the fighter jet "made no sense". He, however, said there was no harm for the government to disclose prices of the aircraft. "I don't think people have doubts about Modi's intentions personally," Pawar told the news channel. The statement had miffed Tariq Anwar and was used by BJP leaders to highlight that despite its attempt at building a united opposition front, Congress failed to find support on the issue. In 1999, Tariq Anwar along with Sharad Pawar and P A Sangma broke away from Congress (I), in protest of a person of foreign origin being appointed as president of Congress party and formed Nationalist Congress Party Watch
