Mumbai Curfew: Strict Implementation Of Section 144; Unlock Exemptions To Continue | Know Key Points

New Delhi: Amid the continuous rise in the number of Coronavirus cases in the city, Mumbai police on Thursday announced to re-impose restrictions on movement and gathering of people under section 144 of the Code Of Criminal Procedure. As per the latest development, the curfew shall be effective midnight and come to end on September 30th at 24:00 hrs (midnight). However, the officials clarified that no new restrictions have been imposed. The city police said that citizens will still be able to go to work (maximum allowed is 30 per cent).   1. In an official order, the Mumbai police stated that ll movement of one or more persons in areas designated as "containment zone" by the Municipal Authorities is prohibited, except for essential activities, supply of essential goods and medical emergencies.

The order signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Shahaji Umap stated that, "It is apprehended that there is likelihood of spread of the COVID-19 virus through gatherings of persons in public or private areas that there is grave danger to human life, health or safety due to the same. the undersigned in the capacity of Executive Magistrate is fully satisfied that there are sufficient reasons/grounds for passing prohibitory orders under the section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code 1973 to ensure that there is no danger to human life, health or safety."

"Whereas Mumbai city continues to be threatened with the spread of COVID-19, it is considered expedient to issue prohibitory order for restricting any presence or movement of one or more persons in public places or gathering of any sort anywhere, including religious places to prevent further spread of the COVID-19 virus in the areas under the control of Commissioner of Police, Greater Mumbai," the circular read.

  5. As panic grew, the police authorities and state government clarified that the order issued under section 144 CrPC is only an extension of the previous order issued on 31st August. No new restrictions have been imposed by the city police.
  6. The Mumbai police has clarified that the latest notice is in the line of routine orders that the police issues every 15 days.

  8. Meanwhile, people in several cities and towns in Maharashtra are opting for voluntary 'Janata curfews' to control the pandemic, officials said on Thursday.
  9. Nagpur, the state's second capital, has decided to go for a 'Janata curfew' for two of the remaining weekends of September -- starting from September 18 night till September 21 morning followed by September 25 night till September 28 morning.
  10. As per the latest figures, Mumbai has recorded a total of 1,75,886 cases of Coronavirus. While 1,35,566 patients have been cured and discharged, 8,277 lost their lives due to the deadly disease. till date. There are as many as 31,678 active cases present in the city.
