MP Political Crisis: Scindia Quits Congress After Meeting PM Modi

MP Political Crisis: However, soon after he shared his letter on Twitter, Congress issued a statement saying he has been expelled for anti-party activities.

New Delhi: Rebel Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday tendered his resignation from his current position at the Congress party, soon after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended, shoving the grand old party into a deeper crisis on the festival of Holi. The 19 MLAs who belong to Scindia camp have also followed the suit and have tendered their resignation. Scindia made official his resignation letter dated March 9, sent to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday,  by sharing it on Twitter. However, soon after he shared his letter on Twitter, Congress issued a statement saying he has been expelled for anti-party activities. ‘The Congress President has approved the expulsion of Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect for anti-party activities,’ the statement read. Scindia started his letter by addressing the Congress President as “Dear Mrs Gandhi.” “I'm tendering my resignation from the primary member of the INC and as you well know this is a pth that has been drawing itself out over the last year,” he said in the letter. Scindia will announce his induction into BJP at around 6 pm in the evening. Here is the resignation letter tendered by Scindia. Scindia met PM Modi before tendering resignation: Scindia met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg on Tuesday, signaling that he is all set to quit the Congress.  Union Home Minister Amit Shah also accompanied Scindia to the prime minister's residence for the meeting which lasted for more than an hour. Sources said that resignation letters of about 20 Congress MLAs are ready and will be handed over to the Speaker. Seventeen MLAs, including at least six ministers, known to be Scindia loyalists, are currently in Bengaluru. Watch: Meanwhile, Chief Minister Kamal Nath huddled with Digvijaya Singh and other senior Congress leaders in Bhopal to ward off the crisis. Chief Minister Kamal Nath promised to reconstitute the state Cabinet after an emergency meeting late on Monday night. Following the meet, around 20 ministers resigned reposing faith in Nath's leadership. In Delhi, sources said hectic efforts were underway by the Congress leadership to save the party's government in Madhya Pradesh and placate Scindia who has long been at daggers drawn with Kamal Nath over leadership issues. Scindia looking forward to Rajya Sabha route: After the formal joining, a meeting of BJP election committee will be held in which Scindia will be declared BJP candidate from Madhya Pradesh for the Rajya Sabha polls, sources said. Scindia may also be made union minister in the Narendra Modi government while his loyalist MLAs will be made cabinet ministers in Madhya Pradesh, sources added.
