'Rights & Guarantees By Indian Constitution Being Mutilated': Mehbooba Mufti On J&K Delimitation Report

Jammu and Kashmir CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that the saffron party wants to erase all symbols of Muslims.

New Delhi: While addressing a press conference, Mehooba Mufti lashed out at the Delimitation Commission and said that it did not follow a method in carving out new constituencies, according to PTI. She said it was an attempt to divide the people of Jammu and Kashmir into sectarian and social grounds.

She said, "They have done delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir, some areas joined with the other, without any numbers. Somewhere, there is a constituency where there are one lakh votes, while in others, there are 1.75 lakh voters. There is no method. Now, they will repeat it across the country".

The PDP chief said that the draft recommendations of the Delimitation Commission are an attempt to divide the people of Jammu and Kashmir into sectarian and social grounds. "The rights and guarantees given by the Indian Constitution are being mutilated and the Delimitation Report that has come recently is part of that", said Mufti, according to an ANI report.

"Our country is not being run according to the Constitution, but according to the BJP's agenda. But we are going to fight it tooth and nail. We will resist the cycle of destruction that they have started in Jammu and Kashmir. We are not going to give them an easy way to move forward", Mufti said according to the PTI report.

Speaking about the delimitation exercise, Mehbooba said that the committee tried to make the people of Jammu and Kashmir fight each other at the sectarian level and social level. "Our struggle will be against this. Our political agenda is that Jammu and Kashmir is a political issue, but they want to make it a religious one. We have said it continuously that Jammu and Kashmir has been made a laboratory", she said.

She spoke about the hijab controversy and said that the BJP is not just coming for the hijab, it will come for other Muslim symbols and erase all.

"I fear BJP won't stop at Hijab. They will come for other symbols of Muslims and erase all. For Indian Muslims it is not enough to be an Indian, they have to be BJP as well," ANI quoted the Mufti as saying in Srinagar.

Jammu and Kashmir CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that the saffron party wants to erase all symbols of Muslims. Mehbooba said it has been made a national issue because it is a symbol and an identity of a particular community.

They do not want that the Muslims in the country live as Indian Muslims It is not enough for them if we remain as Indians, but they want us to be BJP wale, she said.

"Jammu and Kashmir is a political matter but they (BJP) want to make it a community matter," she added.

According to her, the situation has only become more complicated after the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

Mehbooba said the country is being criticized internationally over the issue.

But this will not continue forever. I think the people of the country are getting united and are understanding that our country used to hold its head high because of secularism and democracy. But now, in the name of Hijab, the whole country has been put in the dock she added, according to PTI.

After some students wearing hijab were allegedly weren't allowed to attend classes at Government Girls PU college in Udupi district in Karnataka, protests began on February 4. Following these protests, a three-day holiday from February 9 has been declared in all the universities under the Department of Higher Education and colleges under the department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE).
