Mamata Leads Massive Rally Against CAA, NRC; Says ‘People Giving Befitting Reply To BJP's Arrogance’

Banerjee led a massive march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Kolkata.

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday attacked the Bharatiya Janta Party and raised incessant slogans against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, National Register of Citizens (NRC) at a rally. She led a massive march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Kolkata. She mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for making contradictory statements on NRC and asked the Central dispensation to quit, saying people have started giving befitting replies to BJP's "arrogance and audacity". She also demanded the BJP government at the Centre to withdraw the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). "BJP take back NRC, take back CAA. You also quit. You have done enough. The country is burning, unemployment is at an all-time high, the economy is in very bad shape," the Trinamool Congress supremo said. "In Assam, detention camps have been made under the order of centre and Supreme Court but there is no detention camp in Bengal. This protest is to protect our rights," she said. "The government cannot control Uttar Pradesh. People there were been shot at. I will be visiting Siliguri on December 29 and will hold a protest on December 30 there," she added. Mamata has been at the forefront among chief ministers of non-BJP-ruled states against implementing the amended Citizenship Act. Last week also she had taken out a massive march to protest against the Act. Berating the BJP government, she said: "At times it plays the India versus Pakistan card, and at times it plays the Hindu versus Muslim card. This isn't the way a government should function."
