EC Lambasts TMC On Memorandum Over Mamata's Injuries, Says 'Undignified' To Even Respond

Slamming the TMC over its claims, EC, in its letter, said that it looks "undignified to even respond" to allegations that the poll panel is doing things in the state at the behest of a "particular party".

Kolkata: A day after the Election Commission (EC) sought a detailed report of the incident in which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received leg injuries in West Bengal's Nandigram, the poll body on Thursday sent a strongly-worded letter to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on its memorandum over the incident.

Slamming the TMC over its claims, EC, in its letter, said that it looks "undignified to even respond" to allegations that the poll panel is doing things in the state at the behest of a "particular party".

The poll body was responding to a memorandum sent to it by a delegation of the Trinamool Congress in regards to the incident that took place in Nandigram on Wednesday wherein Mamata Banerjee suffered injuries.

"Having said that it is rather unfortunate that the memorandum in question is full of insinuations and averments, which in fact questions the very basis of creation and functioning of Election Commission," the letter by EC read.

Further lashing out at the TMC, EC said that it is completely incorrect to suggest that the Election Commission has taken over the law and order machinery in the state in the name of conducting elections and appropriated the whole governance structure.

"This virtually tantamounts to undermine the very foundation of the Constitution of India, the most sacrosanct document in a democratic polity. The Commission does not appropriate or take over the day-to-day governance of any state including West Bengal...," it noted.

The Election Commission, earlier this week, removed of Virendra as the Director General of Police of poll-bound West Bengal with immediate effect, and appointed P Nirajnayan in his place.

While speaking to reporters, Mamata Banerjee alleged That she suffered injuries in her left leg after being attacked by "four-five men" in Nandigram during election campaign.
