‘Opposed Voting By EVM Since 2003’: Digvijaya After Cong Poll Rout, BJP Says ‘Disrespecting Voters’

In the aftermath of the MP polls, Digvijaya Singh alleged the possibility of EVM hacking, prompting a swift response from the BJP, which dismissed the claims as a recurring tactic employed by the opposition.

The aftermath of the recent state assembly polls has seen the Congress leadership expressing skepticism over the election outcome. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh raised doubts about the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and expressed that he has opposed voting by EVMs since 2003.

The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, in a post on X, claimed, "Any Machine with a Chip can be hacked. I have opposed voting by EVM since 2003. Can we allow our Indian Democracy to be controlled by Professional Hackers? This is the Fundamental Question which all Political Parties have to address."

MP Congress President Kamal Nath, speaking ahead of a review meeting in Bhopal, asserted that some MLAs informed him about receiving only 50 votes in their own villages, raising concerns about the accuracy of the results.

"Everyone knows what the atmosphere was in the state. Some MLAs met me today in the morning and said that they got 50 votes in their own villages, how is this possible?" questioned Kamal Nath, as per news agency ANI.

Nath also suggested that the exit polls were designed to influence public perception, stating, "The exit poll was to create an atmosphere. The one who knew the result in advance might have prepared the exit polls." The majority of exit polls had predicted a lead for the BJP, although a few favored the Congress.

'Disrespecting Voters': Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal On Digvijaya's Post

Reacting to Digvijaya Singh's allegations, Union Minister Giriraj Singh dismissed them as a common tactic employed by the opposition. "It is not new. The opposition raises questions on EVM only when they lose elections," remarked Giriraj Singh, as per ANI. He questioned the inconsistency of the opposition's stance, asking why similar concerns weren't raised after wins in states like Himachal Pradesh or Telangana.

Giriraj Singh, emphasising the need for introspection, commented, "When they lose instead of looking into why people did not vote for them, they raise questions on EVM."

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and BJP MP Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti also criticised the Congress for casting doubt on the electoral process. Meghwal urged the opposition to halt the spread of negativity, stating, "By saying this (that there is a problem in EVM), they are disrespecting the voters also."

BJP MP Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said, "When they were in power from 2004-2014, they did not question the EVM. They did not question it when they won in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka. They won Telangana too. Opposition trusts neither the EVM nor the public", as quoted by ANI.

Madhya Pradesh witnessed polling for 230 assembly seats on November 17, with the BJP securing a comprehensive victory by winning 163 seats, leaving the Congress trailing with just 66 seats. The BJP's dominance has been a longstanding trend in the state, interrupted only briefly by the 15-month tenure of the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in 2018.
