'Great Respect For Him': Opposition Welcomes Bharat Ratna For Veteran BJP Leader Advani

Several political leaders cutting across party lines also welcomed the Centre's decision to confer Bharat Ratna to BJP leader and Former Deputy PM Lal Krishna Advani.

New Delhi: BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani will be honoured with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday morning, calling it an "emotional moment" for him. He posted on X, "I am very happy to share that Shri LK Advani Ji will be conferred the Bharat Ratna. I also spoke to him and congratulated him on being conferred this honour. One of the most respected statesmen of our times, his contribution to the development of India is monumental. His is a life that started from working at the grassroots to serving the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister. He distinguished himself as our Home Minister and I&B Minister as well. His Parliamentary interventions have always been exemplary, full of rich insights".

Several political leaders cutting across party lines also welcomed the Centre's decision to confer Bharat Ratna to Lal Krishna Advani. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh heaped praises on the BJP veteran, saying, "In 2002, LK Advani saved Narendra Modi...LK Advani saved the chief minister (Gujarat) in Goa...In 2014, in Gandhinagar, LK Advani said Narendra Modi is not my disciple but a brilliant event manager..."

"When I look at them (LK Advani and PM Modi) I recall these two things...LK Advani put the real character of PM Modi in front of the country in 2014", he added, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was seen on the same page, hailing the Centre's decision to honour Advani, with the highest civilian award, as per ANI.

While speaking to news agency PTI, Samajwadi chief Akhilesh Yadav said, "He (LK Advani) made a place for himself in politics. We (Samajwadi Party) always had and will have a great respect for him".

NCP chief Sharad Pawar lauded the BJP veteran for practising "clean politics" and said, "It is true that we (Lal Krishna Advani and I) had political differences but in personal life, he practised very clean politics. He got this honour late but the government's decision is right..."

BRS MLC K Kavitha, too, congratulated Advani. "Many congratulations to Lal Krishna Advani for being conferred Bharat Ratna." She, however, made a jibe at the BJP, saying this was the saffron party's agenda. "This is good that the Ram temple was also built and Lal Krishna Advani has been conferred Bharat Ratna. BJP's agenda seems to be being completed," K Kavitha said, as per ANI.
