Kerala floods: Opposition wants judicial probe into the tragedy

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], August 31 (ANI): Ramesh Chennithala , the leader of opposition in Kerala Assembly, on Friday termed the recent floods in his state as 'man-made tragedy' and demanded a judicial inquiry into the calamity.

"We are reiterating that this a man-made tragedy and are requesting for a judicial inquiry to go into details so that such a human tragedy does not occur in future. But, the government has been very evasive on this," said Chennithala.

"If you go through the details, India Meteorological Department had cautioned the government, but they did not take the warning seriously. If they would have taken the warning seriously; this dam should not have been open in the last moment without informing anybody. This is a man-made tragedy," he added.

Chennithala further asked the government to set up an impartial tribunal for the proper distribution of relief funds to the flood victims.

Kerala was recently hit by the worst floods of nearly a century, which claimed lives of more than 400 people and caused a damage to the tune of Rs. 20,000 crores. (ANI)
