Karnataka Flood Update: Water Levels Above Danger Mark, Rs 50-Crore Relief Package Released

The state has issued red alerts in Kodagu, Udupi, North Kannada, Dakshin Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikmagalur and Hassan districts. NDRF and SDRF teams have also been deployed in the flood-prone district.

Bengaluru: As incessant rains affected several districts in Karnataka, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced Rs 50 crore relief package amid the coronavirus pandemic. The leader, who is being hospitalised for coronavirus infection also said more funds will be released later. The water level in many rivers has crossed the danger mark. Heavy rains are expected in many districts of the state in the coming days. Even though the CM himself is undergoing treatment for coronavirus but closely watching the flood situation in the state. Considering the situation in the state, the CM has spoken to Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar over a call and directed to release an amount of Rs 50 crore as emergency relief. Many districts of the state are currently facing heavy to very heavy rains and also the district collector has been instructed to keep an eye on the situation. Last year, North Karnataka had to face heavy floods due to lack of proper coordination with Maharashtra. In an attempt to avoid such a situation, senior officials of the state are considering releasing water from the dam. NDRF-SDRF teams deployed in several districts that are on red alert. The state has issued red alerts in Kodagu, Udupi, North Kannada, Dakshin Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikmagalur and Hassan districts. NDRF and SDRF teams have also been deployed in the flood-prone district. The meteorological department has forecast heavy rains in many parts of the state in the next three-four days. The situation is deteriorating in Kodagu, Belagavi, Hubli, Dharwad and flood conditions are being witnessed in many parts of the state. The heavy flow of water is expected in the dam of Kaveri basin. In Belagavi, Markandey river, Malprabha, Ghatprabha, Dudhganga and Krishna rivers are in full swing. The parts around these rivers have been submerged. Many houses in Alur and Sakleshwar taluk of Hassan district have been damaged while crops have also been severely damaged. Heavy to very heavy rains have is expected in the coastal areas of North Kannada, Udupi, South Kannada. Heavy rains continue in Mal Nad area Shivamogga, Kodagu, Haasan, and Chikkamagaluru.
