Last month, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde had recommended Justice NV Ramana as his successor.

Justice Ramana, who will be the 48th CJI, was appointed to the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.

He will take over as CJI on April 24, 2021 after the retirement of incumbent CJI, SA Bobde on April 23.

"President Ram Nath Kovind appoints Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India, with effect from 24th April 2021," the government said in a statement.

Justice NV Ramana is the senior-most judge in the top court after the CJI. Born on August 27, 1957, justice Ramana has a tenure till August 26, 2022.

He has specialised in constitutional, criminal, service and inter-state river laws."

Justice Bobde was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India in November 2019, succeeding Justice (retired) Ranjan Gogoi. He has been part of several key cases, including the five-judge constitution bench that passed the historic verdict that cleared the way for the construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.
