India Called On Bangladesh To Ensure Safety Of Hindus & Places Of Worship: MoS Kirti Vardhan Tells Parliament
MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh said that the responsibility for the protection of life and liberty of all citizens of Bangladesh, including minorities, rests with the Government of Bangladesh.
The central government on Thursday informed the Parliament that several incidents of desecration and damage to Hindu temples and deities in Bangladesh have been reported in the past few months, adding that India has expressed its concern over the incidents and called on Bangladesh to ensure safety of Hindus and their places of worship.
The remarks were made by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in in the Rajya Sabha in response to a query raised by RJD MP AD Singh.
"The Government has also called upon the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities and their places of worship," the reply noted.
"The primary responsibility for the protection of life and liberty of all citizens of Bangladesh, including minorities, rests with the Government of Bangladesh," it added.
The minister was questioned if there is a surge in the incidents of desecration and damage to Hindu temples and deities in Bangladesh. The RJD MP also asked whether the government had taken up the issue with its Bangladesh counterpart if there was an increase in such incidents.
Singh was also asked whether Bangladesh had given any response on the matter and also about the efforts being taken by India to stop such incidents from further escalation, news agency PTI reported.
"Several incidents of desecration and damage to Hindu temples and deities in Bangladesh have been reported in the past few months. The government of India has expressed its concerns over such incidents, including the attack on a Puja mandap at Tantibazar in Dhaka, and the theft at the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple at Satkhira during this year's Durga Puja," Singh said.
After the denial of bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh earlier this week, India on Tuesday expressed "deep concern", urging the authorities in the neighbouring country to ensure the safety and security of all minority communities, including Hindus.
Das was arrested by the Bangladesh Police on Monday at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in Dhaka. He was sent to jail on charges of sedition after a Chittagong court denied him bail. This sparked massive protests, with thousands of supporters surrounding the van he was being escorted back to prison and blocking the way for over two hours. Several people were injured and a lawyer was killed during the protests.
