Weather Update: Monsoon Rain To Intensify In Maharashtra, Heatwave To Continue In These States

In a relief to the residents of Maharashtra, the southwest monsoon reached the state, bringing respite from scorching heat amid a severe water shortage in many parts.

Monsoon In Maharashtra: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an increase in rainfall activity along the coast of Karnataka and Maharashtra beginning on June 8. The IMD has forecasted a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain and thundershowers in Mumbai and its suburbs. The weather office has anticipated thunderstorms accompanying rainfall in northwest India today. It has also been said that maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 35 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius in Mumbai.

In a relief to the residents of Maharashtra, the southwest monsoon reached the state on Thursday, bringing respite from scorching heat amid a severe water shortage in many parts.

IMD scientist Sunil Kamble said the monsoon has reached Sindhudurg district in south Konkan and Sangli and Kolhapur in western Maharashtra, as reported by news agency PTI. It is likely to reach Mumbai between June 9 and 10, he added.

Several parts of Maharashtra have been witnessing severe water shortages, with high temperatures exacerbating the situation. As of Thursday, 11,565 villages and hamlets in 34 districts were being provided water through government and private tankers, according to official data.

Besides Maharashtra, the IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, and Sikkim till June 10.

According to the weather office, Kerala is likely to witness heavy rainfall till June 9, while Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to see heavy downpours on June 7. As far as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are concerned, these states are expected to see rainfall on June 9 and 10. In its bulletin, the IMD said, “Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam and Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim during 06th-10th; Arunachal Pradesh during 08th-10th; Nagaland on 10th June, 2024".

Heatwave In North India

The IMD has said that heatwave conditions are likely to persist over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand on June 7. The weather office has also forecast the possibility of hailstorms and squally winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph speeds in Rajasthan on June 7.

Heatwave conditions are set to prevail in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Odisha till June 10. The agency has also issued an alert for severe heatwave conditions in Uttar Pradesh from June 8–10.
