On January 8, Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Singh said his government is not responsible for the ethnic violence, which started on May 3, 2023. The clashes between the valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kuki-Zo people have continued since. He said that the ethnic violence erupted after the Manipur High Court asked the state government to reply to the demand of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meiteis. He said a rally was held opposing the order and houses belonging to the Meiteis
