'Building Bungalows': Amit Shah Takes Corruption Dig At Kejriwal Over Delhi Services Bill

Union Home Minister Amit Shah referred to the row over the renovation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's bungalow during his address in the Lok Sabha about the Delhi services bill.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday addressed the Lok Sabha as the House took up the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 for consideration and passage. Speaking about the bill, Shah said that the ordinance refers to the order of the Supreme Court which says that the Parliament has the right to make laws on any issue related to the National Capital Territory of Delhi. "There are provisions in the Constitution that allow the Centre to make laws for Delhi," he added mentioning how some political sides claimed that the Centre does not have powers to make laws about Delhi.

Hitting out the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shah said: "In 2015, a party came to power in Delhi whose only motive was to fight, not serve... The problem is not getting right to do transfer postings, but getting control of the vigilance department to hide their corruption like building their bungalows."

This remark is in reference to the renovation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's bungalow that triggered a political slugfest between the AAP and the BJP. The saffron party has accused CM Kejriwal of spending crores to ‘beautify’ his bungalow when the national capital was battling Covid-19.

The Union Home Minister claimed that Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Rajaji (C Rajagopalachari), Rajendra Prasad, and BR Ambedkar were against the idea of Delhi being given the status of full statehood, news agency PTI reported.

"I appeal to the opposition MPs to think about Delhi not their alliance," the Union Home Minister said in Lok Sabha, also emphasising "even after they've (the opposition) formed an alliance, Narendra Modi will become Prime Minister again with full majority."

After the Home Minister's address, AAP MP Sanjay Singh maintained that the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 tabled in Lok Sabha is "unconstitutional and against the Supreme Court's verdict", as quoted by PTI.

The Delhi Services Bill was introduced by Union Minister Nityanand Rai on Tuesday, it aims to replace the contentious Ordinance on the control of services in the national capital.
