Handwara encounter update: Two militants killed, 5 security personnel martyred; operation underway

Handwara encounter update: The Jammu and Kashmir Police till late Saturday night, did not confirm if any militant was killed in the operation so far. The operation started at 9 pm on 28th February in Babagund area in Handwara.

2 militants were killed in a 56-hour-long encounter in J&K's Kupwara district.
Five security personnel have lost their lives in the encounter.
The forces suspect presence of another terrorist in the area.
Handwara encounter update: After 56-hour-long encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, security forces finally killed the two militants today. The operation to flush out militants from the Babagund area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district entered third day on Sunday. The forces suspect presence of another terrorist in the area for which the search operations are underway.  Five security personnel have lost their lives in the encounter which has been going on for the last three days. The operation started at 9 pm on 28th February in Babagund area of Handwara and the encounter broke out after the terrorists fired indiscriminately at the search party. UP CM Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 25 lakh each and a government job to the next of the kin of two CRPF personnel- Vinod Kumar and Shyam Yadav- from the state who lost their lives in Handwara encounter in Jammu and Kashmir. On 1st March forces blasted the house in which militants were hiding, and presumed them dead. But, when the debris was being checked, militants rose from the blasted house and fired indiscriminately killing 4 security men and injuring 9 others. The militants shifted to another house in the denesly packed residential area. On Saturday evening, security forces blasted another house belonging to Wali Mohamnad Shah. But it is not known if the militants have been killed. One civilians was killed in the protests at the encounter site yesterday. Two CRPF troopers and two policemen were killed in the gunfight on Friday. Besides, a civilian also lost his life in subsequent clashes between the militants and security forces. Watch Video- Meanwhile, a day after the Union government banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) in Jammu and Kashmir under the UAPA in the wake of rising tensions between India and Pakistan, more than 60 bank accounts of Jamaat-i-islami have been identified and sealed in Srinagar. More than 350 enrolled members of JeI are arrested till now. The order has led to a crackdown on JeI’s functionaries operating 400 schools, 350 mosques and 1000 seminaries across the state. The total estimated properties could be well over Rs 4,500 cr.
