Parliament Winter Session: Amendment To Women's Reservation Act Among 18 Bills Listed For Discussion

The government released its legislative agenda for the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament on Wednesday, which is set to begin on December 4 and end on December 22. The bulletin contained a total of 18 bills, two of which pertain to extending provisions of the Women's Reservation Act to Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry, and three of which involve replacing criminal laws.

According to a bulletin from the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the government's agenda includes a proposal to increase the strength of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. The objective is to raise the assembly's composition from 107 to 114, aiming to ensure representation for Kashmiri migrants, displaced individuals from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Scheduled Tribes.

In addition to the legislative initiatives, the government has included the first batch of supplementary demands for grants for the fiscal year 2023-24 on the session's agenda. These demands are set to be presented, discussed, and voted upon during the parliamentary proceedings.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi has called for an all-party meeting on December 2 on behalf of the government. The Winter session of Parliament will begin on December 4 and last until December 22, according to Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi.

According to a notification issued by the law ministry in September, President Droupadi Murmu approved the women's reservation bill. The bill aims to provide women with 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures.

The UPA government officially introduced the bill in the Lok Sabha on September 12, 1996. The bill had been awaiting approval by Parliament for the past 27 years. The 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' bill is the first to be passed by Parliament since it relocated to the new Parliament building on Tuesday.
