Good news! Now apply for driving license, vehicle registration online; Delhi RTOs take digital route
It is being said that the Central government is also working towards building a centralised system to make driving license procedure simpler across the country.
New Delhi: In a major digital transformation, all the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in the national capital will go online today. The Delhi government has announced that all the RTOs in the city will start accepting applications for driving license, learners’ license and even vehicle's registration certificate online from October 1, 2018. As per reports, the entire licensing function of all the RTOs (except appearance and test) in the state will be done online. Delhi will be the first state of the country where RTOs have been extended to the www (World Wide Web) ecosystem. However, very soon other states including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Goa etc. might also have an online system in place to apply for driving license. It is being said that the Central government is also working towards building a centralised system to make driving license procedure simpler across the country.
Earlier this year, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and state transport minister Kailash Gehlot informed that all the 13 licensing officers in Delhi would have e-RTO wing and almost 11 transport related services including learning or permanent driving licence, getting a registration certificate and others will have to be applied for on the website of the transport department. In the long run, Delhi transport department will completely shift online and will not accept any paper or manual application for availing transport related services.
For those who are not able to fill the forms online or pay the fee online due to any reason, the state government has rolled out ‘doorstep delivery service’ scheme where applicant has to call 1076 and a representative from the department will visit applicants house to get the form filled and collect required documents and the fee.
The move came after a report of illegal issuance of several driving license came into light in the national capital. The government, with its digital initiative, aims to simplify application procedure for citizen and reduced corruption in RTO offices.
