German Minister Expresses Fascination Over India's UPI System During Visit

The German embassy in India on Sunday (August 20) praised India's digital infrastructure after Germany's Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Volker Wissing, experienced India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. Wissing's interaction with UPI left him "fascinated," leading to commendation for India's digital success.

The German embassy shared their appreciation on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging India's digital prowess as exemplified by UPI. The embassy posted, "One of India's success stories is digital infrastructure. UPI enables everybody to make transactions in seconds. Millions of Indians use it. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport @Wissing was able to experience the simplicity of UPI payments firsthand and is very fascinated!"

The embassy also shared a video featuring Wissing engaging with the UPI system.

Wissing's visit to India was in the context of the G20 summit. He participated in the G20 Digital Ministers Meeting held in Bengaluru on August 19. The German Embassy in India highlighted the meeting, noting, "G20 Digital Ministers meeting in Bangalore is about to start. Minister @Wissing & our great host Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw have an insightful discussion on deepening Indo-German cooperation in IT and especially AI through our Digital Dialogue."

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is India's innovative mobile-based payment system that enables instantaneous round-the-clock transactions. Countries including Sri Lanka, France, UAE, and Singapore have joined India in advancing fintech and payment solutions. Notably, India and Singapore signed an agreement in February 2023 to link their payment systems, while France integrated UPI for transactions at the iconic Eiffel Tower.
